Looks like the season is officially over. We got 5 to 6 inches of snow over the weekend with more to come and no warm temperatures in sight for the next six months. Unfortunately, there will be no indoor skate park for me this year. I might go down to Rays MTB MKE this winter but I guess I'll have to be content with riding in the shop.

On the bright side, we've got some custom made rails for the competition that I'm hosting at Grinders Sports in Rice Lake and the Banshee Bungee to keep me entertained this winter. I may post some videos of that, so don't be surprised.

First snow came and went already. It was a close call. I'm still riding as much as I can. Getting filming done when I can as well. I'm a bit worried about finding a place to ride this winter as well but I'm sure I'll figure something out.

I got a bunch of demolition done at the shop over the weekend. With that project behind me I'll be able to ride more often. I may even be able to make some day trips to some regional indoors.

Also, sometime this winter I'll be dropping some news about my Lake Owen visits this summer that just might include something about RBF, so stay tuned for that.

The inevitability of snow is starting to bare its weight on me. I feel like I have more unicycling to do this season and not enough time to do it. Unfortuneately the Barron indoor is closed and I won't have a place to unicycle. So I'll be out of the game for 7 months if I don't think of an alternative.

I'm trying to get some filming done for my DVD edit as well as start a few fun projects for web edits. BTW, if you're ever watching a web edit and one of those anoying google ads pops up, don't just x out of it. Not only could it be something that you're legitimately interested, it could help the creator of the video you're watching fund creation process. So all I'm saying is don't hesitate to click the ad.

On a more posative note, riding with Ian, Kyle and Shaun J over the weekend was a pretty awesome experience. Not to mention the St. Cloud Skate Plaza is absolutely sick! I had a lot of fun and I'd like to ride with as many people as I can, so hit me up if you want to shred. I'd really like to tear-up duluth with a bunch of fellow unicyclists sometime. Also, I've never been to Chicago. I don't mind day trips. A day trip for me is something like 4 or 5 hours one way. $ to do so is the only issue.

I'd like to see a lot of colaboration and cooperation going down in unicycling. The sport needs to be legitimized and brought to the public eye. I'm trying to set something up at the Lake Owen Action Sports Camp for the RBF (relentless by fate) team to do just that.

Let's see... Are there any photos or videos I can post?...
Not really. Check back soon though.

Skate Plaza

Probably making a trip to the St. Cloud Skate Plaza this weekend. I saw pictures and video and I feel that I need to go there ASAP. Looks beautiful. Also, I filmed a couple of cool shots at night a few weeks ago. Colby dared me to do a 180 back grind. Didn't work out very well. But I'll keep at it. Anyway, here are a couple of clips from when I filmed. Opposite slide and a shadow crankflip.

Edit

Got a new edit I'm working on. Collecting footage to make a web-edit and even more footage to use exclusively for a DVD edit that will be for sale this coming Spring. In the mean time, in response to the growing concern for the lack of style and flow in street unicycling, I intend on releasing a quick edit on this blog to demonstrate that there's at least one unicyclist refining style these days.

Also, here's a couple of somewhat interesting shots I took while in Oshkosh the other day.
BTW Oshkosh has a really awesome skatepark for unicycling. It's too bad I didn't get a chance to film there more. Also, there's a Frolf'N Course right next to it. So it's pretty chill. You should go there sometime.

Nationals Trip Part 2

Nationals was a lot of fun. I visited Noah's Ark and House on the Rock with family while I was staying down in Plattville, and I got to go to Madison a few times as well. The venue was small and a bit of a letdown, but everyone was awesome and I got to do a little bit of street riding while I was down there. I managed to get ahold of just one picture of me competing.

Crankslide
Also landed Opposites down that rail. Attempted blunts and 180 opposite blunts but was not successful. I had some amazing lines dialed in, but unfortuneately for me, the comp was done in zones and was more of a banger throw-down. I hope next year they take into consideration flowing lines. Personally when I watch a skateboard or BMX flick, I enjoy seeing the riders put together interesting and graceful lines. But there's no denying the talent that is out there for unicycling. I'm proud to be part of such a progressive sport.

Nationals Trip Part 1

First thing I did was stop by the beautiful Black River Falls skatepark in central Wisconsin. Blasting the hip on the DX and flying around the berm on the coaster were a lot of fun.

The park

So Black River Falls was a lot of fun. I want to go back there in the worst way.

Wisconscene

I leave for Nationals tomorrow. I'm heading down to Black River Falls early in the morning to session their skatepark and perhaps eak out an episode of My 5ifteen Tricks. I'll be heading down to Plattville to stay with my Aunt and sort of use that as a base camp for Nationals. I'll head over to Madison on Thursday Morning to represent Grinders at the Outdoor Reps Association show and afterwards I'll try to make it to the goodman community center to ride.

also, enjoy the pics that I've been snapping with my new camera!

Lake Owen Visit: First Session

I'm riding my bike up to the Lake Owen Action Sports Camp tomorrow morning to spend about a week there. For those of you who don't know, Lake Owen is the Woodward Camp of the midwest and is located in Cable Wisconsin. I'll be representing Torker Unicycles and teaching some of the kids how to ride a unicycle. I hope the skaters get excited about unicycling because of this visit. It would be nice to not only make pople aware of the sport, but also to get them enthusiastic about learning how to ride and in the end, stick with it.

I'll hopefully have video and pictures to post when I get back, but until then ride on!

Silent Sports

I recently sat down for an interview with Silent Sports Magazine and decided to go out and take some pictures specifically for the article that will be featuring me and my unicycling career in this year's July issue. I encourage you to check out the magazine. It is a regional sports magazine that focuses mainly on outdoorsy/adventure sports & activities.

A picture that I think looks neat:
Also, don't forget to sign the petition for the COASTING UNICYCLE!

What the heck is with those hecklers?

People bother me all of the time when I'm out riding my unicycle. Some people have good intentions, but others have bad. While some people are playful, others are malicious. But Ironically, both of these types of people tend to say the exact same things.

"Where's you're other wheel?"
"You're missing you're other wheel!"
"Did someone steal your other wheel?"
"Hey, Pop a wheelie!"
"Where's the other half of your bike?"
"Couldn't you afford the entire bike?"
"Hey, I didn't know the circus was in town."
"Can you juggle?"
"Where are your handle bars?"

There are more. There are many more. But trust me. It's rare that I hear a new and original quip. Although the funny thing is, you can change the meaning of these quips by trying to sound mean or trying to sound nice.

So I've developed a set of responses for each of these quips. But more importantly, I've developed a nice response for the people who are trying to be playful, and a much more clever response for the jerks who are trying to be mean. I don't feel the need to post these because I'd like my quips to remain fresh. But I'd like to acknowledge the fact that if I can expect the same exclaimations from people, I should probably have a bag of responses to throw right back at them. This goes out to all of my unicycling followers... We can be more clever than them. Not that it is any feat. But we should definitely be prepared when we go out for a ride.

Boasting of Coasting Success!

Took that Grinder down to the trail behind the college on Easter and had a great time. Up at the goodwill I did my first "stunt", which was nothing much; I just hopped up to a curb, coasted across and dropped down. But that along with flying through the trail was a really inspiring experience. Up until Sunday, the goal of taking this thing off large jumps seemed quite distant. Now I know that it is very possible and could be an awesome niche for unicycling to take up in action sports. I'll have video posted soon, but I want to wait for my next "My 5ifteen Tricks" episode to officially debut the coasting unicycle. If you have any questions about the coasting unicycle, please email me at shaidecody@yahoo.com. I'd love to hear what you've got to say.

Expecting a nice Easter ride

Tomorrow's supposed to be beautiful. Definitely going to get out and ride. Might even do a little filming of the coasting unicycle if I get a chance.

Also, speaking of unicycling and beautiful, here's a video of a trick I thought would go viral for sure:
Unicycle Backflip

Enjoy!

2010's Mid-Summer Cut

So last year I did a lot of experimental editing of the footage from the Midwest Treasure Hunt and despite liking this particular version, I decided not to make it public. But now as we're on the brink of May and I'm dealing with snowy conditions, I can't help but think about being in the middle of summer again. So for the sake of warm thoughts and dry pedals, here's my 2010 Mid-Summer Cut.

Monday, March 28, 2011

So I'll be heading to Lake Owen for the first time ever this summer. I've wanted to go there ever since I was big into agressive inline but could never afford it. As I got into unicycling I still wanted to go there but they don't have any unicycling sessions! Fortunately they're allowing me to come up and visit with the unicycle.

I'm excited about this because this means a lot of fresh faces are going to be exposed to unicycling. Torker even hooked them up with a new 2011 Unistar DX. http://www.torkerusa.com/bikes/unicycles/2011-unistar-dx

I'll be bringing up two unicycles myself, so I hope to get the skaters really excited about unicycling and I hope to successfully teach some how to ride.

If you don't know what Lake Owen is, its the Woodward of the Midwest. They really are sister camps. It's located in Cable Wisconsin, which is only an hour and a half or so north of where I live. Being so close is difficult when I'm unable to go, so I'm extremely excited for this opportunity. You can check out the website here: http://lakeowencamp.com/

I also hope to return to the camp a few times throughout the summer. I'd be sad if I couldn't be up there for a bit of northoften week. http://northoften.net/blog/

Also, I made a wicked snowman yesterday. Don't get me wrong, I really need this snow to be gone, but I made the best of it.

Check it out.

Coasting Unicycle

Coasting Unicycle.

I'll post pictures and maybe some video some time.

I've had the idea as long as I've been unicycling. I'll take credit for recognizing the opportunity, but Grinders Sports Shop in Rice Lake Wisconsin is responsible for the fabrication and assembly.

If there's any chance that this thing could be available on the market, interest must be expressed. Please let me know if you'd be interested buying a coasting unicycle. shaidecody@yahoo.com

Aquafest

I've decided that I'm not doing the Badger Brew Express Unicycle Demo for Aquafest this year because of lack of Club interest. Might not do the Readapalooza Demo at the Library either. But I'll definitely be doing the Bike Jam at the skate park. Should be the biggest skate comp/bike jam year yet because of what Bubba has planned.

Also looking forward to planning the Dirt Jam. Should do that shortly after Aquafest. Would like to get some larger bands in for the gig. Let me know if you're interested in playing.

Tradeshow Pics

I uploaded some of the photos I took at the tradeshows last week. They're on the Grinders facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=282582&id=62509694624&saved#!/grindersbikeshop

I also found this picture of me that I didnt know existed. I found it while browsing through some of the links on the north of ten site. http://northoften.net/blog/

It is a picture that was taken at the last Grinders Dirt Jam. Just thought it was interesting.

I'm pretty sick today and I'm not sure if I'll be going boarding or unicycling. But the next chance I get I want to do some self timer shots with the Nikon from the campus. Should be something to look forward to. That and not being sick.

Grindrs Dirt Jam 2011

After a brief hiatus, the Grinders Dirt Jam will be returning for the summer of 2011. NOTHING is official yet, but I'm thinking fourth of July weekend. I'll try to make it bigger and badder than last time if I can. But I hope I can test out the coasting unicycle on the jumps at that time to get in front of an audience. I'll have more details on the Jam as I start planning and colaborating.

Shows

Midwest Winter Sports Reps Association Inc show in Madison was awesome.
This weekend I'll be heading over to QBP's Frostbike show. I'll be posting pictures of both on the Grinders facebook page.

On top of seeing great equipment and great people, I hope to do some networking at Frostbike to promote my unicycling. But regardless how much swag and literature that I take home with me on Saturday, I'm sure I'll sit down to an awesome QBP style FREE lunch! Can't wait.

Been a little over a week since I got back from Ray's MKE, and sad to say, I haven't ridden since. However, 40 degree temperatures are forecast for this weekend, so I'll be expecting some motivational weather soon.

Rays was awesome though. Did some MTB as well as some Uni, and I got to talk to and meet new people and I had a blast. Saw some familliar faces as well. The whole weekend was very enjoyable. Did some flips into the foam pit and tried my best to get creative on the skinnys and ladder bridge lines on my unicycle.

I've yet to edit episode 3, but when its finished I'll post it up quick. Hopefully soon I'll have some filming opportunities, which will make it easier to post what I allready have filmed since I'll have a stockpile of footage.

I recently bought a Huffy Green Machine to experiment with the coasting hub. Ran into some issues as far as the bearing inside and outside diameter goes as well as the spacing in between on the axle but I've still got a couple of radical options involving either grinding and spacers, or choping and welding. Either way, I'm sure its possible, as I makeshift taped my unicycle seat to the end of the front frame peice and rode it accross my living room. I coasted for about three feet without falling. I'm not sure to what extent I can take the riding, but I'm determined to make it work and I'm sure it will be fun.

Thats all I've got today. Hopefully as winter comes to an end things will start speeding up.

Episode 2

Here's Episode 2, filmed at Open Shop at the Barron Indoor.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ze3nhEvCYpQ

Ray's Milwaukee Grand Opening

It's official. I'm going to the Ray's indoor mountain bike park in Milwaukee Wisconsin this weekend! They're having a grand opening event and some professional riders should be present as well as some other really exciting events.

I can't wait to ride in this place. I'm bringing both my unicycle and my mountain bike so if the unicycle isn't working out I can still shread around on my mountain bike. But I think it will be fun either way.

My goal, since this is a Grand Opening event and there will be hundreds of people there, is to gain exposure. It would be nice to convince many mountain bikers and BMXers of unicycling's legitimacy. It would also be nice if they knew my name specifically of course.

Needless to say, I feel a weight on my shoulders to represent unicycling in the best way that I can.

Check back for details early next week. I may have pictures and videos but I'll definitely have a story to tell.
